COUNSELLING FOR NON-COUNSELLORS – ONE DAY COURSE
AIMS The aims of the course are to enable:
o The development of awareness of the counselling process and the skills involved.
o Practice and improvement of some of these counselling skills.
o Development of the ability to manage interviews using counselling skills.
o Development of an awareness of ethical issues and the need for support in activities using counselling skills.
o Development of sensitivity to and awareness of the process of change.
OBJECTIVES On completion of the course participants should be able to:
o Conduct an interview showing the use of counselling skills.
o Display skills necessary for the management of interviews using counselling skills.
o Understand the need for support and the limitations of using counselling skills.
o Demonstrate their knowledge of some of the ethical issues connected with using counselling skills.

The course will cover the following topics:
o What are counselling skills?
o Interview management and time keeping.
o The need for clear boundaries and structure.
o Ethical issues, the limitations of the use of counselling skills and the need for support.
o Self-awareness.
o Enabling change.
